The Mid-Atlantic Chert Database
Background
The Mid-Atlantic Chert Database (MACD) Project was initiated by Daniel Fellman in 2024 as part of his undergraduate thesis at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. What began as a literature review of chert sourcing studies in the Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) quickly developed into a broader research initiative aimed at establishing a digital reference collection and material database to standardize chert type identification and nomenclature across the MAR. By synthesizing regional data, the project seeks to improve comparative analyses and better understand patterns of chert resource procurement and utilization. The project later expanded to include an interactive chert source distribution web map and reference index designed to provide the archaeological community with a centralized, accessible research tool.
To create and maintain a standardized, accessible digital resource to standardize chert identification, increase awareness on the geographic availability of chert sources within the archaeological community, and explore new approaches to provenience analysis in the MAR.
To become the leading reference platform for chert identification in the MAR, advancing regional collaboration and understanding of past resource use.
